Responsible Recycling

In order to preserve our planet's natural resources and to ensure the environment can sustain future generations, responsible recycling is becoming increasingly important in the 21st century. In today's throwaway society, people need to start recycling plastic, paper, cardboard, metal, glass and more.

There are many reasons why we should recycle: first, it saves energy, as manufacturers don't have to produce items from raw natural resources - so it benefits the environment. Goods manufactured from recycled materials create less pollution, using less water and less energy. This in turn helps keep production costs down, so it can benefit the consumer, helping to save them money too.

Recycling produces less carbon and this can help cut hazardous greenhouse gas emissions. It also reduces the need for landfill sites, which are getting full. Nobody wants to live next to a landfill, so why dump waste products when they can be recycled?

We can also preserve our natural resources and protect wildlife by recycling, as there's no need to destroy habitats. Recycling paper alone will save millions of trees.

When consumers begin recycling and buying recycled products, this in turn creates more demand for recycled goods, so it benefits the economy. All things considered, there are no bad points to recycling.

It's amazing what you can do with old discarded packaging when it's recycled. Plastics are among the major materials that can be widely recycled and turned into an amazing number of items.

For example, plastic containers used for liquids such as shampoo, household cleaning products and milk are tough and lightweight. They can be easily recycled into bottles and containers again, or they can even be made into larger items such as garden furniture, playground equipment and recycling bins.

The plastic bags we use to carry groceries, plastic bubble wrap and the bags used to wrap bread and other foodstuffs can also be recycled. They can be turned into new plastic bags and then recycled again and again, or they can be made into plastic lumber and used for park benches, yard decking or fences. It's amazing how versatile plastic is.

Plastic bottles used for soft drinks and water can become many different things when recycled, such as t-shirts, fleece jackets, insulation for sleeping bags and coats, carpets and of course more bottles. It takes roughly ten bottles to manufacture sufficient plastic fibre to make one t-shirt, 63 bottles to make a sweater, 14 bottles to make insulation for a ski jacket and 114 bottles to make fibrefill insulation for a sleeping bag.

Plastic bottle caps are made from a different type of plastic from the bottle and can be recycled into different things such as garden tools, storage containers, rope, yarn, shopping bags and more bottle caps.

Plastic foam packaging that cushions delicate items such as television sets and gaming consoles in transit can be recycled into products such as plastic insulation, photo frames and more packaging.

You would be amazed at what can be recycled. Even old electrical goods and batteries can be recycled, so if you've ever wondered what to do with your old hairdryer or kitchen appliance after they're no longer needed, pop along to your local recycling centre.

Items that can be recycled include electrical hair-styling appliances, electric toothbrushes, kettles, toasters, blenders, electrical tools - even lawnmowers - mobile phones, TV remote controls and large appliances such as fridges, freezers and cookers.

Simply ask your local recycling centre or council what recycling facilities are available in your local area and do your bit to help the environment.
