The most popular toys back then might seem strange or old-fashioned to a young person of today but if you grew up in the twentieth century, the toys and games you played as a youth no doubt provided some of your fondest memories.
As Christmas approaches and shoppers flock to the stores to buy presents for their little ones, let’s take a nostalgia trip back into the past. How many of these toys do you remember?
He-Man and Masters of the Universe Figures
The character of He-Man has been around since the 80s and is regularly being rebooted in new and exciting forms. Figures of He-Man are still just as popular with today’s kids as they were in the 80s and 90s, as well as other Masters of the Universe characters like Skeletor and Beast Man.
Tracy Island
Anyone over the age of 30 will fondly remember Tracy Island as the secret headquarters of the International Rescue Organisation from the television series Thunderbirds. The Tracy Island playset came with an array of movable pieces and action sounds, allowing users to recreate the famous launch sequences from the show. Although the toy is no longer in production, astute collectors may be able to find one online.
Cabbage Patch Kids
These cloth dolls were launched in 1982 and were one of the most sought-after toys for several years. As well as dolls, the Cabbage Patch Kids brand also brought out clothing, bedding, board games, and music albums. Amazingly, the former US president Barack Obama even had a Cabbage Patch Kid modeled after him in 2012!
Gameboys
The Gameboy first appeared in 1989. Unlike the flashy iterations of today, the original Gameboy featured just five buttons, a dot matrix screen and a single speaker. A child in the 90s could play games including Super Mario Land, Tetris and Baseball. Ah, those were the days! Although later versions are much more advanced, there are retro replicas available for the nostalgic gamer.
Sylvanian Families
This line of animal figurines was launched in the mid-80s yet is still on many a Christmas wish lists in 2022. Sylvanian Families features a line of cute animal characters including rabbits, hedgehogs and cats. Aimed at 5- to 7-year-olds, the range created the perfect concept to fire the young imagination.
